The North Hungarian Regional Distance Education Centre as an organizational unit of the University of Miskolc was established in 1998 granted by the PHARE Multi-Country Programme for Distance Education along with 40 similar centres in 13 Middle-East European countries. Thus our centre was a member of an international network from the beginning, it started its working in learning material development activities in the framework of projects carried out in international cooperation. Before the establishment of the organisational frames as a coordinator of a subprogram in the IDEAL Tempus project we worked in the development and adaptation of printed learning materials with adapting modern electronic, multimedia and on-line learning possibilities.
After the PHARE Multi-Country Programme the financial conditions of the network building and the methodology development were provided by grants of projects won by the Centre and the success was supported by the national and international partner relationships.
Six from the 19 projects of the Centre finished in 2005 aimed to ensure the infrastructural conditions of our operation and focused on the tasks of multilevel network building. The objective of the project UNIMAN granted by Tempus was the establishment of the integration within the institution and the inner conditions of working, the project titled TÁVHÁLÓ established a wide cooperation with the participation of all important higher education and adult training institutions of the region.
Within the framework of our 13 projects with an objective of learning material development we worked out programs in various fields of study for target groups of different training levels. So far 50 e-learning modules with subject program of 10-30 hours and interactive, highly illustrated learning units were carried out.
Our cooperation with the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU) has an important role concerning our international relations. EADTU is a European distance teaching organisation coordinating operative cooperation. In the project Integration we as a partner institution of EuroContact Business School (ECBS) had a significant role in that Hungary was the first of countries in the Middle-East Europe to join the EuroStudy Center Network.
We also played an important part in enhancing the ODL network cooperation in Middle-East Europe: the main objectives of MISSION project (SOCRATES/Minerva Program) were to strengthen the partner relationships of the network established by the PHARE programme and to make the further cooperation regular and more effective. In the framework of the project finished in 2003 the Distance Teaching Centre coordinated the work of 17 partners from 13 countries. Continuing this project we won a Minerva project titled eTaster with an objective of a wide European cooperation which took on the development and multilingual delivery of 12 short, free on-line courses.
